Story of NUJ

Journalism profession has come a long way in Nigeria since the establishment of (Iwe Iroyin fun awon ara egba ati Yoruba) in Abeokuta, 147 years ago by the British missionaries. Un-arguably, it stands out as one of the oldest modern professions to take root and flourish in Nigeria.
However, Nigerian Union of Journalist have come of age as both of the professional bodies and a trade union group, it also serve as a platform for leadership training and anti colonial struggle under the British colonial rule.
Apparently, our founding father saw journalism as a weapon for fighting against oppression and injustice by the colonial system of government. Example of earliest newspapers existing then were Lagos times ( 1880-1883), Lagos observer(1882), Lagos weekly record(1883), chronicle(1908), Nigerian times(1910), African messenger(1921) and west African Pilot in 1937.
The Nigerian Union of Journalist founded on March 15 1955 marks the beginning of a silent revolution by nationalist for the independence of Nigeria. This nationalist includes Nnamdi Azikwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macauley, Chief H.O Davies. Since 1995, the Union had 15 presidents with Mr. Mobolaji Johnson Odunewu 1955-1960 has the first president while Mohammed Garba is the current president.
Similarly, NUJ have had five national secretaries with Chief Olu Oyesanya (1955-1959) as the first secretary and Shu’alibu usman leman (2002-till date) as the current national secretary.
The Union has a training wing, The International Institute of Journalist which was establish towards the realization of its vision to train and retrain its members and also to make them adequately contribute to national development. Presently, the registered membership of NUJ is above 25,000

Majority of news stories are stale as they consist of old events which can’t be considered as news. Thus, this site is not highly informed for it to inform its readers based on current happenings.
Moreover, this site can’t be manipulated by any right thinking memberof the society i.e a sane person to falsify facts, opinions, news stories for his or her own political ambition or advantage.
