Story of NUJ
Journalism
profession has come a long way in Nigeria since the establishment of
(Iwe Iroyin fun awon ara egba ati Yoruba) in Abeokuta, 147 years ago by
the British missionaries. Un-arguably, it stands out as one of the
oldest modern professions to take root and flourish in Nigeria.

However, Nigerian Union of Journalist have come of age as both of the

for leadership training and anti colonial struggle under the British
colonial rule.
Apparently, our founding father saw journalism as a
weapon for fighting against oppression and injustice by the colonial
system of government. Example of earliest newspapers existing then were
Lagos times ( 1880-1883), Lagos observer(1882), Lagos weekly
record(1883), chronicle(1908), Nigerian times(1910), African
messenger(1921) and west African Pilot in 1937.
 The Nigerian Union
of Journalist founded on March 15 1955 marks the beginning of a silent
revolution by nationalist for the independence of Nigeria. This
nationalist includes Nnamdi Azikwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert
Macauley, Chief H.O Davies. Since 1995, the Union had 15 presidents with
Mr. Mobolaji Johnson Odunewu 1955-1960 has the first president while
Mohammed Garba is the current president.
 Similarly, NUJ have had
five national secretaries with Chief Olu Oyesanya (1955-1959) as the
first secretary and Shu’alibu usman leman (2002-till date) as the
current national secretary.
The Union has a training wing, The
International Institute of Journalist which was establish towards the
realization of its vision to train and retrain its members and also to
